Break Apart Arrays to Find Area

Directions: Use the array blocks to split the problem into tens and ones. Fill in the missing pieces and solve the total area.

Example

22 × 5 can be broken into 10 × 5 + 10 × 5 + 2 × 5. Then you add the smaller areas together.

22 × 5 = 10 × 5 + 10 × 5 + 2 × 5
50 + 50 + 10 = 110

How to Solve It

  1. Count how many full tens are in the first factor.
  2. Write one 10 × rows term for each full ten.
  3. Use the leftover ones for the last smaller array.
  4. Add all the smaller areas to get the total area.
