3rd Grade Math
Arrays and Area: Break It Apart
Look at the array, break the two-digit factor into tens and ones, then add the smaller areas together to find the total.
Break Apart Arrays to Find Area
Directions: Use the array blocks to split the problem into tens and ones. Fill in the missing pieces and solve the total area.
Example
22 × 5 can be broken into 10 × 5 + 10 × 5 + 2 × 5. Then you add the smaller areas together.
22 × 5 = 10 × 5 + 10 × 5 + 2 × 5
50 + 50 + 10 = 110
How to Solve It
- Count how many full tens are in the first factor.
- Write one 10 × rows term for each full ten.
- Use the leftover ones for the last smaller array.
- Add all the smaller areas to get the total area.
